Venice Carnival is a cultural event in Europe that I really wanted to see and experience. In my 8th grade German school, we had an art project about this event, and my mom and I went to Venice in February 2018 to see it all live!
Venice is a great city. It is in northern Italy on the Adriatic coast. It is a city in water because it is built on marshy ground, and many canals run through this amazing old city. The biggest one is the Grand Canal. You can go from one place to another by boat and the typical gondolas.
Venice has a long and famous history, many significant buildings, and even this great carnival event. This dates back to the Renaissance after the great plague. People wanted to have fun and wore imaginative and colorful costumes. Today, many people come to Venice every year to see the costumes. It is fascinating. Venetians and many people from all over the world come in magnificent historical robes and dresses or fantasy costumes. Many of them wear the typical Venetian masks with feathers and glitter or plague masks. Everything is colorful and special.
Since we are also interested in art and history, we visited the famous Palazzo Ducal, the Doge’s Palace. Here you can see a lot of art as well as the prisons in the damp cellars.
In St. Mark’s Square, there is the Campanile bell tower and St. Mark’s Basilica. The Rialto Bridge is also a very famous sight in Venice. It is a bridge with stores to the left and right of a small street over the Canale.
The trip to Venice was very impressive. It was really great to be a part of this event and to see this world-famous city.
