National Trails Day

Posted on 4. June 202028. June 2022 By Matthias & Andrea No Comments on National Trails Day

from Celina-Marie Kuehne /

June 6, 2020, was National Trails Day (a nationwide event encouraging people to explore their local trails and spend time outdoors), and I wanted to be a part of it. For this event, the Hill Country Conservancy organized a virtual fun run on June 6, 2020, between 7:00 am and 12:00 pm.

Usually, people come to the Tails to run or walk together during the event, but the event had to be a little different this year due to participation restrictions. People were not allowed to run in groups and had to abide by the spacing rules.

My mom and I participated locally in the Fun Run on our neighborhood trail. We could choose a 5k running course or a 1-mile walking course, which shows how Dick Nichols Park connects to the Violet Crown Trail. We opted for the walking route and started at our apartment complex, walked 1 mile to the starting point at Dick Nichols Park, and then walked another mile on the loop trail.

During the walk, we met many people who participated in the event. Some people and children waved at the sides, and signs and signposts were partially “decorated.”
Since it is suitably only “virtual,” everyone should take a photo at the start and end points to send to the Hill Country Conservancy via the website.

After that, we got a virtual medal for participation. Everyone should also communicate about the event and post it on social media to promote the trail, the organization, and the event and encourage people to use and care about the trails.

It was a fun experience, including learning about Dick Nichols Park as our neighborhood park and helping clean up, promote and protect the trail and nature around it.
