Now the time has come… We have a senior at Austin High School (who not so long ago was a freshman with only basic English skills). Time really does fly. But as it should be, this “last first day of school” is being celebrated in style by the senior class (even if some of it seems a little strange to us).
The school day began particularly early for the seniors of the Class of 2023 on this day – at 7:00 a.m. Parents and teachers organized numerous activities to make this last first day of school something special. In Car Smash, a car is sprayed with paint and then the students dismantle the wreck. This is a symbolic way to let off steam. Normally, a car is found at a junkyard and then the engine and other interior parts are removed. This leaves only the body and wheels, making it easier to dent or scratch the vehicle (something that would probably not be possible in Germany).
Otherwise, there was music, a bouncy castle for the “little ones,” doughnuts, hamburgers, and a photo booth. The seniors clearly had fun and enjoyed an unforgettable start to the school year!
