It has now become a tradition for us to give something back to our community on “It’s My Park Day” and take part in cleaning and maintaining our green spaces. And so it was only natural that on the twentieth anniversary of this event, we also took part in one of the 93 projects and struggled out of bed early on Saturday morning in somewhat gloomy weather.
As always, we arrived at the last minute at the nearest assembly point in Nichols Park. There were again several tasks to choose from. Those who wanted to could spread mulch around the trees or use brushes and paint to beautify various objects. However, we were once again determined to tackle the garbage in the park, so we equipped ourselves with the necessary utensils and set off.
It’s always amazing how big our little park is when you get off the concrete paths and follow the beaten tracks. And in a way, it was pleasing that the amount of garbage was very manageable on this day.
We were also pleased to see that other people from our neighborhood are continuing Celina’s (s)milestone project and distributing painted stones for others in various places in the park. We should do that again sometime.
After we had searched the park in a criss-cross fashion and other fellow campaigners were also unable to find any more garbage, we went back to the collection point to hand in our spoils and then drove home with a good feeling.
We’re already looking forward to the next campaign in spring, and we’ll see where we’ll be active then.
